Portrait Photography 101

If you are interested in taking peoples portraits then this is a must read. I have some tips and advice to share with you. In my 12 years as a Professional Photographer, I have learned a few things about taking someone’s portrait.

This may seem obvious but to be a successful photographer the most important talent you need is to bring out the absolute best in your subject! Sure lighting and gear are also important and I’ll get to that in a bit! I first want you to understand that portrait photography depends on the interaction you have with the person you’re photographing.

It takes a lot of concentration and skill to be successfully with your clients, people, and models in photography. Landscape or nature photography affords you the luxury of time. People do not! A client can get restless and bored easily, and will not sit all day as you try to find your creative side! Portraits require relationship skills as well as technical skills.

One of the first things in portrait photography is to capture the best side of your subject! As well as showing them your positive and happy side. This will give your client a feeling of confidence and help them with expressions that can set the tone for a creative an interesting photo.

There is another important aspect of portrait photography, and it’s the background you chose! If you don’t have a studio and wish to shoot outdoors, your client and the props you use, are considered the foreground! Remember your outdoor background will either enhance or kill a portrait photo.

A great way to combat this (as much as you can), is to make a list of locations that make for a beautiful background. Here are a couple of ideas. Try a secluded beach, an open field, a mountain range, the steeple at a church, or even an old building (inside or out), and of course the sky.

Try to keep your background simple. It’s fine to have a busy background if you are not going to have it in focus! To make this work I suggest making a detailed list of places that are easy to get to and will make great backgrounds for your portrait. Keep in mind the light and the time of day, the weather, and local regulations about photography.

You can determine what gear you will need as soon as you have worked out your location. The location is everything, however once it has been determined, you can choose your lenses, what flash are you going to use, a filter, and remember the hard sunlight, etc. It’s a very creative plan, and a lot of fun to make and follow.

You’ll be amazed at what your imagination will come up with… Good luck and Great shooting!

Guide to Glamour Photography

Many photographers do not find much difference between glamour and fashion photography. True they are similar in certain aspects, but glamour photography is more about photographing a female model with little or no clothing, while Fashion photography is all about the clothing! Glamour photography is not intended for endorsement purposes. During World War II, glamour photos were called pin-ups, and consisted of scantily clad movie stars. These were extremely popular among American soldiers.

It’s believed the most important change came with the introduction of Playboy Magazine! This was the first magazine to focus on nude models and its target was the mainstream male consumer. Hugh Hefner published the first issue of Playboy in December 1953 with Marilyn Monroe on the cover. Nude photos of Marilyn (the reason I started in photography), were also printed on the inside, which enhanced her image as a sex symbol and helped to subdue the public protest. In recent years popular men’s magazines have started a trend by focusing more on the “glamour” and less on nudity. Some of these magazines include Maxim, Stuff Online, and the UK’s FHM.

Photographing female models has evolved over the years, and as a photographer you need to understand this evolution before you can ever become a professional glamour photographer!

As a glamour photographer, there are some key elements that you need to master and understand. First you must understand the sharpness of your models eyes is critical. As a beginner with auto-focus cameras, most promising glamour photographers tend to focus on the nose, chin, or shoulder. This lesson is to learn how to focus on your models eyes while shooting. Photographers may experience a problem when using auto-focus cameras. This type of camera will tend to focus on the center of the image by default. Always be careful with your settings, and be sure to understand just how your camera operates!

Focusing on your Models eyes in the frame…

…Once this is done, you should depress the shutter-release slightly, to hold the focus, compose the model in the frame, and then push the shutter-release to take the photo. This technique may be slow learning however once you develop a feel for it; you’ll always find your subject’s eyes in focus.

Second, an important element of glamour photography is your choice of backgrounds. The use of backgrounds is the most important visual element after the model. If you don’t use the right background no amount of make-up, clothing or even the lack of, will allow you to achieve a great picture? A professional glamour photographer cannot ignore these elements as they are critical in achieving that award winning image!

Some of the best backgrounds to shoot include indoor and outdoor natural surroundings, a studio, beach, and even a bedroom. Start by experimenting; and soon you will find the right combination of these important glamour elements!

Nude Photography the Most Popular Type of Photography

The style of Nude photography is one of the most popular types of photography with professionals and amateur photographers! A newbie can be at times motivated by lust to mask a true photographic career!

If you are an amateur photographer, hire an experienced nude model; it can be enormously helpful when starting out. An experienced model will not need a lot of directions or tips. They know how to pose, and/or move their body in ways that are flattering to them, and will help you look good also.

Whenever I shoot an experienced model, I have pre-determined my lighting, and backdrops I intend to use, and have gone over the shoot in my head many times! Trust me this is not the time for trying out new equipment, ideas or not having a plan!

If you are working with a model that does not have Nude experience, it is your job to give direction, posing, support, and suggestions. I will ask if they had any poses in mind. I feel it’s my job to keep the model comfortable; I never start out with her naked on the first shot. It’s important to tell a model to bring with them something they feel comfortable in, a bra and panty set, a teddy, or some piece of lingerie or swimwear.

In working with a model who has told you she has never posed nude before is more than likely telling a little white lie. It may be true that she never posed nude with a professional photographer, but what about those pictures her boyfriend took? Also the photos she may have had a friend snap “just to see how see looked” or were going to be a surprise for someone very special!

My only point is the model has been naked before, and maybe she was using her bedroom, the basement, or even outdoors in the woods down the lane… It’s your job when you interview her to find out what makes her comfortable, is it a person, place, or item of clothing?

Great, now I have something to help me, help her to feel more comfortable with me! I will also ask a model to bring a few of their favorite images of themselves to the shoot so I can ask what it is about that picture they liked. This is also a great opportunity to have them tell me what the outcome they are hoping for is. When you add all this together, it will help you determine the type of poses that will work best to fit with your overall plan. This should help the photo shoot go with ease.

Many women will have different reasons they want a nude portfolio done! Regularly, it’s to visually document this period in their lives. Many women will regret not having photos taken when they were younger. Conversely, they realize now having this photo shoot will prevent greater regret later. The wish to have a nude portfolio done is becoming more and more a desire women want to do for themselves! It’s true, women want to feel beautiful, a portfolio can help them recall this moment in time.

Photographers, please remember the best manner to learning the techniques for producing a quality nude portfolio is to study the masters! There are many… Studying references and books from a master photographer will be one of the most important lessons you can learn anywhere. Also practice, practice and more practice!

A true quality nude portfolio starts with trust. The client has to trust you the photographer, to make them look sexy, desirable, forever young, and feminine. Remember all women are beautiful, and should be respected by their photographer first and foremost! Respect will build trust; it relaxes the client, and draws out their confidence.

I cannot ever imagine myself getting tired of the sight of a woman in all her glorious nudity and the language of her body. To me, the female body is fascinating, tantalizing, seductive, mysterious, and desirable! I simply hope that I can sufficiently capture and display their beauty in a manner she deserves.

Like the beauty of flowers, photographing a nude woman will need the proper surroundings to reach the height of her beauty!

Water is Sensual...

OK, you bought a new bikini and you’re looking hot… What’s to do next? First you do a Photo Shoot, and add it to your portfolio, then get it wet!

A swimming pool is a great place for a workout. Just jumping in can give you a delightful sensual experience. As your Photographer I say – it’s all good… I believe you can enhance your level of strength by taking ALL your senses into consideration. It also helps to get "in tune" with your own body, this will give you great results!

Water is sensual and it can have a soothing effect on your body. When we immerse ourselves in water, it feels like a form-fitting security blanket – can it be perhaps, like the sensations felt in the fluid-filled womb? If you read this article and find yourself wanting to have the sensation of water around you, I say you are going to really enjoy water workouts.

Water workouts are so good because of the buoyancy of the water supports your body. It reduces stress on your weight-bearing joints. With water supporting your joints, you will see a better range of motion - this is important for a good workout. Water allows you to move more freely, so you can do things in water that you can’t do at the gym. Also some experts say that water is 12 times more resistance than air, which can help to strengthen your muscles.

Exercising in water is often referred to as Water Aerobics, Water Exercise, or Swimnastics. This type of exercise has become very popular in recent years. Today, gyms with pools offer a variety of classes including Water Step, Water Running, and Water Strength Training. This may account for the increase in water fitness enthusiasts, however I think it has a lot to do with the classes being fun, and stimulating!

Swimwear can add a stylish new dimension to your water workouts. So go put on a bikini that "suits" you! If you don’t have a pool at home, great places to find good swimming pools are colleges and universities, health clubs and local recreation departments. Where I am in Arizona, you can do water workouts in an outdoor pool, all year round.

You can also double your fun by working out with a friend…

Get tight, toned, and a sexy new bikini, and go get wet!

A Bikini Model is very attractive, vibrant, and sexy, she is shapely and loves to show off her well proportioned body, and is a women filled with confidence. Bikini Models can wear a one piece swimsuit and/or a two piece Bikini. You should always look relaxed and enjoying the time you spent modeling. Trust me a Professional Portfolio is the best investment you will ever make. Be sure to include your best images, quality over quantity is rule #1, when it comes to a Portfolio.
